Gnomon

A gnomon is the upright part of a sundial that casts a shadow and indicates the time of day. These images were all taken with plastic toy cameras that are lousy at framing, focus and exposure control. Despite these shortcomings, they are perfect for taking photos that concentrate on the single thing that has caught the photographer's attention. Just as the gnomon on the sundial casts an unambiguous shadow indicating the time of day, these toy cameras direct the attention to a single isolated subject.

This series is primarily printed using polymer photogravure. This is an intaglio printing process using an etched polymer plate and ink and paper to create the printed image. As with my other images, I am no longer stuck to just one process for a given image, and I have since printed many of these in palladium, gum-over-palladium and inkjet, depending on what I feel like doing.
