Palladium Prints + Single Sheet Binding

Make a book of your photo prints with the unique Onion Binding

This class combines an introduction to the platinum-palladium printing process with a single sheet binding for a unique book of one’s own photographic prints.

The class will take place over three days. The first day will be an introduction to the palladium printing process, as well as an introduction to the Onion binding. The Onion binding is simple but has some unique properties that make laying out a book of images slightly trickier than one might expect on first glance. Each student will make a model onion binding book that will provide the measurements the student needs to construct image templates and masks for the printing on day two.

On day two, the students will make palladium prints of five or six images they have selected for their books. Basic palladium printing techniques will be taught and quickly learned by the students. Palladium prints are made by hand coating a thicker artist paper with a combination of palladium metal salts and a light sensitive compound. The paper is dried and then exposed to UV light using a negative of the desired image. On day three, the previously-made prints will be bound into a Onion binding book. The students will be ahle to use their previous binding to refine their final finished product.

The students will leave class with a model binding that can be used later for subsequent book layouts, and a finished book of bound prints.

The Onion binding is a book structure that allows for single sheets (the photo prints) to wrap with blank specialty papers in a unique spine to form a rounded onion-like appearance on top and bottom of the book. It is a lovely presentation of single sheet binding. The Onion binding was developed by Benjamin Elbel of the Amsterdam-based bindery Elbel Libro.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone interested in learning one of the easiest and most rewarding alternative printing techniques. Because we will be printing on art paper, this process presents another type of visual content that can be included in books and other similar projects. The student will only need a very basic understanding of Adobe Photoshop.

Polymer Photogravure at Asheville Bookworks

I will be teaching my final polymer photogravure workshop in Asheville this January. Bookworks will be closing as a public-facing entity at the end of March 2019, and this is the last photogravure class I will be teaching there.

The workshop will use a modern polymer coated plate to create an intaglio-etched surface, which will then produce the photographic gradation of tones making the photogravure one of the most beautiful continuous tone photographic printing process. The process presents a fantastic opportunity to expand the range of visual content that can be included in books and other similar projects.

This is a two and a half day workshop that will introduce you to the basics of making polymer photogravure plates. Bring your digital files on Friday evening and walk away with some beautiful photogravures by Sunday afternoon. Sign up at the Asheville Bookworks website.

This new piece of software from BWMastery.com allows the use of QTR to create perfectly calibrated positives from which to make polymer intaglio plates.

A6-Screentest-Template

This is a downloadable template file that assists in making even screen exposure strips on an A6 plate during the calibration process for polymer photogravure. It is in the form of pdf that should be printed off at 100% scale on a laser printer or inkjet printer. The markings allow an opaque card to reveal additional plate material under the screen in even increments. Its use is described in the book Polymer Photogravure: A Step-By-Step Manual Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice available here.

Digital Negatives at Project Basho in Philadelphia

I will teaching a digital negative workshop at Project Basho in Philadelphia from January 15 through 17, 2016. The primary focus will be on using the Quadtone RIP printer driver to create easy-to-use printing profiles that will allow the user to use a single edited digital file to create digital negatives for any number of alternative photographic printing processes. Black and White torture test

This is a rather large tiff file used to test the smoothness of all your digital negative/positive work. In particular, the positive and negative circle gradients have a way of making ‘ramps’ in your correction curves very obvious.
