nox noctis

Lonely, dark, anonymous and non-descript places sometimes catch my attention. Sometimes the light, sometimes the form, sometimes just the creepiness – whatever the reason – I notice. These photos are a collection of the instances where I manage to transform those moments into the less ephemeral form of a gum-platinum print. My favorite images always seem to be taken at night or twilight – thus ‘Nox Noctis’. When I started to assemble these images into a group, they almost seemed to form some weird shadow narrative for my life – a not-quite-real Mitty-esque version of myself dropped into a 40’s noir film. While these images surely amount to cultural residue from spending too much time in front of the television as a kid, I find it fascinating to think that this is what my life is really like – with the right editing.
technical details
These images are all taken with a 35mm Leica rangefinder camera. Many are taken with the weird and wonderful Noctilux lens, one of the fastest lenses ever made. They are all taken sans tripod. I figure there is no point in setting up a tripod for such a teeny little negative. I generally use fast film, guess at the exposure and move on.
